BRAVO ZULU! [Excellence, especially under fire, as our naval friends would say.]

You are 10 for 10 on target, brother Harp!

I probably get under the skin of the pastors I've supported in/through men's ministry over the years, because I keep beating the drum for MEN's programs, MEN's small groups, MEN's 1-on-1 discipleship.

I, too, was NOT brought up in the SBC... in fact, I wasn't even brought up in a church, but in an Orthodox synagogue. I was baptized in an evangelical, non-denominational church but CHOSE to join Southern Baptist Church churches because I appreciate SBC's firmly Biblical teaching and its continued commitment to lovingly sharing the Gospel to the nations -- INCLUDING the Jewish nation.

But I'll go a step further than you have -- I will say that most of our churches are unbalanced, with far too much emphasis on women and not enough on programs for men; too much emphasis on trying to guilt men and fix men and make them conform to the ever-higher expectations of Christian women, and not enough on teaching women how to be loving, gentle, encouraging mothers/wives to their men. Men constantly chided, chastised, nagged, or condemned for the weaknesses of which they are usually already painfully aware don't grow, don't become more Christ-like -- they either "play armadillo" and roll up into themselves, "armor out," or they play "roadrunner" and "run away" to their jobs, their clubs, or sometimes out of the marriage/family altogether.

Okay, maybe guys aren't always as mature as we should be -- so, recognizing that, remember that even with kids, positive encouragement reinforcing good behavior is at least as important as chastising or punishing bad behavior. "Carrots" work better than "sticks." As in the old Aesop fable, the sun's warmth gets the man to remove his cloak, but the wind only makes him wrap it more tightly around himself.

Off my soapbox....

I will be completely honest with you. As a young man in the SBC, who has inquired into Orthodoxy (and know many other young men who have as well) with an open heart. I feel that you are completely missing the main reasons why so many young men are converting in the first place. In my opinion, it has little to do with a lack of strong men's ministries in our churches, because I personally know many SBC churches that have them, but rather it has everything to do with young men seeking to find something that is historically grounded, not shifting and changing like many protestant churches have today (including SBC churches), a church that is fully sacramental in it's theology (as SBC churches are not), liturgy, the desire for and longing for objective truth, and a place that has continuity with the early church and the church for the last 2,000 years. Many modern evangelical/baptist churches today just simply do not have those things. If you want to see more young men flocking into SBC churches like they are into Orthodoxy and Catholicism, we simply have to reform our own churches and retrieve the things we have lost. That is just my two cents. God bless!
